What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO improves the chance that useful, trustworthy web content is discovered and cited in AI-generated answers. Learn how it extends strong SEO without relying on hacks or guarantees.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making accurate, useful web content easier for AI-powered search experiences to discover, understand, and cite. In practice, GEO is an extension of good search engine optimization, not a replacement for it.
The label comes from research introduced by Aggarwal and co-authors in 2023. Their GEO benchmark tested how changes such as adding relevant citations, quotations, and statistics affected source visibility inside a controlled generative-engine setting. The paper reported gains in that experiment, but it did not establish a universal ranking formula for ChatGPT, Google, Bing, or every future AI system. Results varied by topic and method. 1
That distinction matters. GEO is useful as a name for a business goal: being accurately represented in generated answers. It is not a license to promise citations or sell a secret algorithm.
Is GEO different from SEO?
The goals differ, but the foundations overlap.
- SEO helps pages get crawled, indexed, understood, and surfaced in search.
- GEO focuses on whether a brand or page is accurately represented and cited in an AI-generated response.
- AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is an informal label for presenting useful answers clearly enough for people and answer systems to understand them.
Google’s current guidance is unusually direct: its generative features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems, so established SEO practices still apply. Google describes GEO and AEO work for its own AI features as part of SEO. 2
Other systems expose different controls. OpenAI tells publishers that public sites can appear in ChatGPT search and that OAI-SearchBot must not be blocked if a publisher wants page content included in summaries and snippets. 3 Bing now reports citations, cited pages, and sampled grounding queries in its AI Performance tools. 4
The practical conclusion is simple: build one strong, accessible website, then measure how each search experience uses it. Do not create five thin versions of the same content for five engines.
What helps content earn visibility?
No publisher can guarantee that a page will be indexed, ranked, or cited. These practices do improve the quality and eligibility of the underlying site.
1. Make the important content crawlable
Keep core information in accessible HTML, use descriptive internal links, publish an accurate XML sitemap, and avoid accidental noindex rules or crawler blocks. If ChatGPT search matters to you, check OAI-SearchBot separately from GPTBot; OpenAI documents them for different purposes. 3
2. Answer the real question clearly
Put a concise answer near the point where a reader needs it, then supply the context, limits, and next step. Question-shaped headings can improve navigation when they match genuine reader questions. They are not a magic syntax requirement: Google specifically says there is no need to rewrite or break content into artificial chunks just for generative AI. 2
3. Add information only your firm can provide
Publish first-hand explanations, named methods, original examples, case studies with appropriate permissions, and analysis rooted in professional experience. Google’s people-first guidance asks whether content demonstrates first-hand expertise and leaves the reader with enough information to achieve a goal. 5
4. Support claims with evidence
Link important factual claims to primary sources. Identify the jurisdiction, effective date, methodology, sample, or limitation when it changes the meaning. The original GEO study found that evidence-oriented additions could improve visibility in its benchmark; the honest lesson is to make claims verifiable, not to manufacture statistics for citation bait. 1
5. Make authorship and revision history clear
Show who wrote or reviewed the page, why that person is qualified, when the page was published, and when it was materially updated. For articles, accurate Article or BlogPosting structured data can reinforce the visible byline and dates. Google recommends author identity fields and dateModified when they apply. 6
6. Use structured data as description, not leverage
Valid structured data can help machines understand the people, organization, services, breadcrumbs, and articles already visible on a page. It does not carry a documented universal citation multiplier, and Google says there is no special schema required for its generative features. 2
Visible FAQs can still help readers. However, FAQPage markup is not a current Google rich-result opportunity: Google removed the FAQ rich result from Search in 2026. 7
7. Treat llms.txt as optional
An llms.txt file can be a convenient, maintained summary for tools that choose to read it. Google says it ignores llms.txt for Search, including generative features, so the file neither helps nor hurts Google visibility. Keep it only if it serves a documented audience, and never let it replace crawlable HTML, a sitemap, or normal metadata. 2
How should GEO be measured?
Measure observable outcomes instead of repeating a single prompt and calling it a ranking.
- Search Console impressions, clicks, indexed pages, and eligible rich-result reports
- Bing Webmaster Tools crawl health and AI citation data, where available
- ChatGPT referrals carrying
utm_source=chatgpt.com3 - Other identifiable AI referrals and assisted conversions in analytics
- Repeated, dated prompt tests across relevant questions and locations
- Factual accuracy: whether generated answers describe the firm, people, services, and evidence correctly
Prompt results can vary, so preserve the query, date, surface, location, and result. Look for trends across repeated observations, not a guaranteed position.
What should a professional services firm do first?
Start with the work that improves both SEO and AI visibility:
- Confirm priority pages are indexable and linked internally.
- Give every service page a clear scope, location, audience, and next step.
- Add named authors or professional reviewers to advice-oriented content.
- Replace generic claims with original expertise and primary evidence.
- Use accurate Organization, Person, Article, Breadcrumb, and service-related markup where it matches the visible page.
- Establish a measurement baseline before changing content.
That is GEO without the mythology: technically sound SEO, clearer answers, identifiable expertise, defensible evidence, and honest measurement.
