Custom vs templates
Custom website vs WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, and GoDaddy.
Template platforms are good products, and for plenty of businesses they are the right call. This page lays out where they stop, where a custom build starts, and how to tell which one you actually need, without pretending the answer is always us.
Side by side
Seven things that decide it.
Scroll sideways on a phone. Cost figures are rough ranges, not quotes; every platform's list prices change and vary by billing term.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ownership | You own the code, content, domain, and hosting accounts, all set up in your name. The site can move to any host. | Open-source software. You own the files and database and can move hosts. Premium themes and plugins are licensed and renew yearly. | You own your content, but the site runs only on Squarespace. Exports cover pages and posts, not the design. | You own your content and can take your domain, but a Wix site cannot be exported or moved to another host. | You own your content and domain. The site itself is tied to the builder and cannot be exported as a working site. |
| Speed | Hand-built and tuned page by page; fast by default because nothing loads that the page does not use. | Depends on the theme, plugins, and host. Can be fast with care; often slows down as plugins accumulate. | Generally acceptable. Limited control over scripts and asset loading. | Has improved in recent years. Limited control over what loads on each page. | Adequate for small, simple sites. Little control over performance details. |
| Design ceiling | No ceiling. Layout, type, motion, and components are designed for your brand and your customer journey. | High with a custom theme and a developer; otherwise you work within the template you bought. | Polished templates with a consistent look; customization stays within the template system. | Flexible drag-and-drop editor; easy to get an inconsistent layout without design discipline. | Section-based templates aimed at getting a basic site up quickly. |
| Custom logic | Anything you can specify: portals, quoting tools, booking flows, dashboards, and integrations with the systems you already use. | Plugins cover common needs; custom PHP development is possible but adds maintenance. | Forms, scheduling, and commerce built in; deeper logic is limited to code injection and extensions. | Velo lets developers add code inside the Wix platform; the logic still lives on Wix. | Very limited beyond forms, appointments, and simple commerce. |
| Maintenance burden | Low. A static, dependency-light build has little to patch. Care Plan or your own team handles hosting and updates. | Ongoing. Core, theme, and plugin updates plus security patching need attention or a paid maintenance plan. | Handled by the platform. You cannot control when changes ship. | Handled by the platform. When a template is the right call
Sometimes the honest answer is "not yet".
If any of these describe you, a template platform will probably serve you well for now, and we will say so on a quote call.
Your budget is under a few thousand dollars right now
A template with a good plan behind it beats no website. Launch, earn, and upgrade when the business supports it.
You need something live this month
A one-page or short-lived site for an event, a launch, or a test of a business idea does not need custom engineering.
You want to edit everything yourself, often
If you enjoy tinkering and the site changes daily, a builder you already know can be the right tool.
Your store has standard needs
A modest catalog with normal shipping and tax rules is well served by Shopify or Squarespace commerce.
There is no custom workflow
Hours, a few pages, a contact form, and a map. Nothing has to integrate with anything else.
When custom wins
Where templates stop and a build starts.
These are the situations where businesses outgrow a builder. If two or more apply, a custom build usually pays for itself in the work the site can do.
The site has to do something specific
Quoting tools, client portals, booking flows with rules, dashboards, or integrations with the software your business already runs on.
Speed and search matter across many pages
Service-area pages, locations, or a large content footprint where per-page performance and clean markup compound.
The brand has outgrown the template
Customers compare you on their phones. A site that looks like every competitor is not a differentiator.
You want to own the asset
Code, content, domain, and hosting in your name, portable to any host, with no platform deciding what you can change.
Migration guides
Moving off a platform, one guide per platform.
Each guide covers the real limits of the platform, the cases where staying is the right call, what carries over, and the migration steps we follow.
